The 15th SMACA Japan Regatta


Date: March 10, 1999
Place: Shin-Nishinomiya Yacht Harbor

The participants came from as far north as Hokkaido and as far south as Okinawa. Representatives from about 30 fleets scattered throughout Japan together with one representative from Seattle took part in a day of intense competition.

 


Only two yachts compete in the Championship Race: one is the previous year's Defending Champion and the other is the lone survivor of the challenger's tournament.
The Challenger's Tournament
  • l Participants divide up into three groups. In six qualifying races of three heats each, the top ten seeds are determined.
  • The top ten yachts compete in three consecutive races from which two yachts are chosen.
  • The remaining two yachts complete in a match race of three consecutive races to determine who will become the Challenger in the Championship Race.
The Championship Race
  • The awaiting Defending Champion (last year's champion) and the Challenger (the sole survivor of the Challenger's Tournament after 12 races) compete one-on-one in a match race of three races to determine the Japan Cup Champion.
The Yachts
  • All participants sail the CR914
  • All yachts are subject to the "No Modification Principle"
  • While some provisions for modifications have been established, none of these affect performance.

  • Sausage Course for the match races

In the year 2000, the Japan Regatta welcomes it 16th Championship Race, adding yet another chapter to its history of prestigious events.
